Something Borrowed, Men in Blue
A wedding in September 2008 between a Portuguese woman (right) and a Nigerian man in South London, England, came to an unceremonious end when, as part of an ongoing crackdown on fraudulent marriages police arrested the bride as she drove away from the church—separately from the groom—on suspicion of facilitating the entry of an illegal immigrant into Britain. The woman's Portuguese nationality gave her residency privileges in the U.K. which would have extended to her putative husband. Police became suspicious of the match after processing the Certificate of Approval required for non-legal residents to marry. The groom was arrested when he came upon the scene shortly afterward in a separate car; subsequent investigation linked the two to an identity-fraud and human-smuggling ring.
