Tased and Abused
Police on Tybee Island, Ga., issued an apology for the May 21, 2010, tasering and rough arrest of an autistic teenager attending the island city's Beach Bum Parade. Clifford Grevemberg was among revelers with his brother about 10:30 p.m., after the parade, when his brother stepped into a bar to order food, leaving Grevemberg sitting on the curb outside. Grevemberg, tired after the day's events, slumped over with his head in his hands, attracting the attention of police on the lookout for public drunkenness. When Grevemberg, who does not drink, failed to respond coherently to their requests for identification, the police subdued Grevemberg with a Taser, although accounts differ exactly how. Police maintain that Grevemberg became agitated and attempted to walk away from the officers, while another witness maintains that police overreacted to Grevemberg's confusion. Grevemberg suffered scrapes and a broken tooth in his fall after being tased and was cited for disorderly conduct. His case is pending.
