Fill the School with Stuff
A senior prank by members of the Class of 2011 at Durango High School in Durango, Colo., resulted in the closure of the school for four days and incurred cleaning costs of close to $200,000. The contaminant: 30 bales of hay spread through halls and classrooms. The hay contaminated the school with mold spores, requiring air testing and extensive and expensive decontamination. A group of the students came forward to accept responsibility, and were permitted to graduate but faced discipline of public service. The students were not required to pay the clean-up costs, which were largely covered by insurance.
