Murder in Vegas
Mother of three Elena Caro of Las Vegas, Nev., decided to have butt implant surgery in April 2011, performed by a couple that was operating an illegal cosmetic enhancement business out of a tile shop. She was found wandering the street in agony hours later and was taken to a hospital, where she died. She had entrusted her care to Ruben Dario Matallana-Galvas, 55, and Carmen Torres-Sanchez, 47, an unlicensed husband and wife plastic surgery team. The couple, who faced charges of murder and practicing medicine without a license, was allegedly hoping to return to their native Colombia before police caught up with them, but they were stopped at the airport nine hours after Caro's death. They pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in August, 4, 2011, and were each sentenced to the maximum four to eight years in prison.

Note: In cases where victims of plastic surgery survive, their names are mostly kept out of the media. In part, this is due to medical privacy laws in the U.S., but also, it is an effort to protect the privacy of these victims, many of whom will require multiple surgeries to correct the damage that has been done to them. Some will remain permanently disfigured.
