Maine — Charlie Howard
On the evening of July 7, 1984 Charlie Howard was walking home from a party. As he began crossing the Kenduskeag River Bridge, a car full of teenagers on a beer run approached. Three boys, none older than 17, leapt from the car and assaulted Howard. Shouting homophobic slurs at him, they lifted him from the ground and began to push him over the bridge into the river below. After a brief struggle they pried Charlie's hands from the bridge railing and tossed him like trash into the water. Since all of his attackers were juveniles at the time, none of them received more than 24 months in jail.
