Taking from the Rich
Washington, D.C., experienced a spate of flash mob robberies in April 2011 targeting shops in some tonier neighborhoods. The Georgetown Tee's shop in Georgetown was hit repeatedly, with groups of youths entering the store, grabbing Georgetown University merchandise, and bolting before police could respond. At the end of the month, the G-Star Raw clothing store on Connecticut Avenue was targeted by approximately a dozen people rushing into the store, seizing over $20,000 in merchandise (pictured) and running out. Police defended their response time by noting that their procedure requires caution in response to crimes involving large numbers of perpetrators, but resolved to step up patrols to address the issue.
