Trail of the Capital Beltway Sniper
Oct. 3, 7:41 a.m.
A Montgomery County police officer examines the scene of the sniper's second fatal attack. James L. "Sonny" Buchanan Jr., 39, was mowing the grass at an auto dealership in the White Flint area when a sniper's bullet hit him in the chest. He stumbled from the Lawn-Boy mower toward the Fitzgerald Auto Mall before collapsing. Dozens of employees ran to his aide, but he did not survive. A self-employed landscaper and poet, Buchanan had moved to Virginia but continued mowing the dealership's grass as a favor to his longtime client.
