Redmond O'Neal had previously been arrested in Dec. 2009, while completing a court-mandated rehabilitation program for a previous offense. On December 29, 2009, a judge ordered him into an in-custody treatment module at the Los Angeles County jail. After completing another stint in rehab, Redmond was released on probation.
O'Neal was arrested on April 5, 2009, for allegedly bringing heroin into the parking lot of a California jail where he was visiting a friend. O'Neal had been discharged from a residential treatment facility in September of 2008 after testing positive for meth and having traces of heroin found in his room. The treatment was part of a program to allow drug abusers to receive treatment rather than serve prison.
However O'Neal was already on probation for two prior drug convictions. On April 10, a Los Angeles judge ruled that O'Neal had violated the terms of his probation and could face up to three years in prison. On April 17, Redmond changed his plea to no contest and his case was transferred back to the drug courts which had previously sentenced him to rehab. He remained in custody until September 24, 2009, when a judge ruled that he could be released into a treatment program.
Redmond was also arrested in 2007 for suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm during an argument with brother, Griffin O'Neal. Those charges were dropped due to insufficient evidence.
