Arturo "Thunder" Gatti
On July 11, 2009, retired super featherweight and junior welterweight champion boxer Arturo "Thunder" Gatti (above) was found dead in the early morning in the apartment he shared with his wife at the posh Porto de Galinhas seaside resort in northeastern Brazil. Milena Saraiva, a spokesperson for the Pernambuco state civil police, said that the thirty-seven-year-old former junior welterweight had been strangled and that a bloody purse strap found at the scene was the apparent murder weapon. Gatti's wife 23-year-old Amanda Rodrigues has been detained by Brazilian police because of contradictions in her statement to police. Rodrigues, who discovered the body, was also unable to explain why it took her ten hours to notice he was dead. Acquaintances of the couple have stated that the marriage was in trouble and that they had been planning to separate.
