Smoking Smarties
"Smoking" candy is another Youtube trend that's captured the attention of major media outlets. Smarties or other similar chalky candy is crushed up and poured in the mouth, then exhaled through the cellophane wrapper in a cloud of powder that resembles smoke. While there is no intoxication involved in this trend, popular among younger teens, parents are worried about the choking hazards, as well as the implications of young children imitating drug or tobacco use. An especially disturbing potential side-effect, warns Mayo Clinic nose specialist Oren Friedman, is the possibility of maggots infesting the nasal cavity to feed on the sugary residue.
