Anthony was asked again what time he and Lally got home.
"It was around 10:30," he said. By routine, he and Lally had, he explained, entered the apartment as they exited: through the back stairs. "When we walked in, the kitchen and parlor lights were both on."

"The door to Marina's bedroom was closed. Nothing seemed unusual. You know."
Same as any other night.
There was a time difference, however—9-1-1 hadn't been called until 11:53 PM.
Anthony had an explanation. "We realized when we got home that we had forgotten to get cigarettes. So we went back out to the 7-11 on Adams Street," right around the corner, "and then stopped at Nick's Sub Shop," near there, "to get a submarine sandwich."
"What time did you get back?"
"Oh, about 11:00. Tom watched television and I went to make my bed and saw that the blanket was gone." His bed hadn't been made, which was odd to him. "Marina usually makes the beds."
