Today in Crime History: The Lipstick Killer Gets College Degree in Prison

William Heirens, known as the Lipstick Killer, became the first Illinois inmate to attain a four-year college degree in prison on February 6, 1972. That wasn’t his only record: at the time of his death last March, he was the state’s longest-serving inmate, having spent 65 years in prison. Though he confessed to three murders, many think Heirens was innocent.
