Sometime between September 19 and 25, 2001, an assistant to NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw handled a suspicious envelope addressed to Brokaw that contained a "sand-like" powdery substance, which turned out to be anthrax. Though she and 20 others survived exposure, five people died before the FBI investigation was complete.
