The 16-year mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska, a cat named Stubbs, has been seriously injured in an attack by a local dog. It is not known what provoked the attack, but Stubbs’ owner says that the mayor is in a lot of pain following what some are calling an assassination attempt. It is not known if he was planning a bid for the White House in 2016.
Stubbs’ owner, Lauri Stec, plans to file a police report about the incident saying that the unnamed attacker ”needs to go away.” Of the attacker, Stec later told the media that, “Something should be done. I also know that he had a reputation and has a reputation, and I think that the owner should take a little more responsibility for it. He should have never been able to run loose.” ”
Mayor Stubbs was reportedly strolling down the main street of Talkeetna, a small town of 900 near the Denali National Park, on Saturday evening August 31, 2013, in the rain when he was set upon by a dog, which witnesses have only described as “mean.” Stubbs was left clinging to life after the attack with a punctured lung, a fractured sternum and a deep, 5-inch gash in his side. He was reportedly heavily medicated and breathing on his own, though he had a tube in his chest after emergency surgery at a vet’s in Wasilla. The surgery lasted for hours and treatment costs will run over $2000. Stubbs is expected to be in a lot of pain over the next several days. A donation fund has been set up for Stubbs’ medical bills at Nagley’s General Store, one of his usual haunts. The proceeds will go to Mat-Su Animal Care Facility.
Stubbs’ political career began when he was a kitten in 1998 when he ran as an independent write-in candidate against several humans, who apparently weren’t nearly as cute and fluffy, because they lost. Since then he has had no trouble getting reelected, though supporters admit his role is mostly ceremonial. Stubbs has not raised taxes, nor has he attempted to implement any invasive police procedures. In fact, until the attack the only real complaint about Stubbs was that he shed on people’s carpets.
