Hospital apologizes ‘unreservedly’ to man given accidental vasectomy

The actual quote, reportedly spoken by Dr. Peter Williams, Medical Director of the Royal Liverpool University Hospital is, “We have apologized unreservedly to the patient and we are offering him our full support.” The patient, however, may want a whole lot more than support.

The patient was admitted to the hospital for a minor urological procedure where the surgeon reportedly operated on the “wrong site.” Since then, the hospital has had the procedure reversed, but there is no guarantee that the reversal will be successful. Williams went on to say, ”This is a serious incident and we are investigating this fully to understand why it occurred and how we can ensure it does not happen again.”  To protect his privacy, authorities have not released his personal information.

The report in the Telegraph quotes criminal negligence lawyer Ian Cohen estimates that “In a worst-case scenario — sterility in a younger man with no children — the trust might be liable for a figure in excess of £100,000 in compensation.” We can only assume that unnamed patient is currently seeking legal representation.
