In a crime reminiscent of the torture of Sylvia Likens, the mother of an unnamed male teen has been convicted of torturing him over the course of several weeks in 2013. Child services was notified of the abuse by a young relative of the family, who spent a weekend. Though permanently disfigured, unlike Likens, this victim survived.

Christine Gelineau, 53, was convicted after a jury found that she and accomplices, Daniel Tyler Cantrell, 20, of Sparta, Tenn., and the victim’s cousin Amy Nason, 29, tortured Gelineau’s son, then 18, by burning him with lighters, beating and strangling him, and forcing him to eat excrement and worms. Cantrell was also charged with breaking the young man’s ankle. Nason, who was reportedly pregnant with Cantrell’s child, allegedly told the victim to lie to police about the abuse, which he did until he was sure his tormentors couldn’t get to him again.

The worst of the victim’s injuries were the burns to his body. His nipple’s were “completely burned off,” according to one detective’s affidavit. The same was done to the victim’s penis; what is left of it seems to have permanent nerve damage. He was denied food, forced to drink urine and eat feces, was beaten with a stick, stabbed with a pen and burned with cigarettes.

The child, 12, who reported the abuse, took photos of the victims being forced to eat worms. Gelineau and Cantrell allegedly confessed to the torture.

As for the motive, Concord police Lt. Timothy O’Malley said police could only guess, “It’s not a money thing. It’s not about jealously. There are a lot of things that can create motive,” he said. “Right now the best thing we can come up with is abject cruelty.”

At his mother’s sentencing the victim, who is living with relatives and is back in school, read this statement aloud:

“Dear ex-Mother.

“What you did to me is unforgivable. You beat me, starved me, almost chopped my penis off, threw my clothes away, wouldn’t let me bathe. You almost killed me by having me take three (antidepressants) and two muscle-relaxers.

“Now that I know you’re a complete criminal and only wanted me dead so you could go back to your old life.

“You won’t be able to attend my graduation or see me go on to college, so I wish you goodbye. I hope you realize you have lost everything you had.”

Gelineau was sentenced to 30 years.
