No murders occurred in New York City last week. The city’s data website declares: ”No New Murders Reported in the Five Boroughs Since October 6th”
This is the third week in a year with zero murders logged; The week after hurricane Sandy struck the city and a particularly cold week earlier this year also yielded no homicides.
The city reports that “through Sunday, October 13th, New York City has seen 90 fewer murders than at this point last year: 256 murders in 2013 compared to 346 murders in 2012 – a decrease of 26.0 percent. Murders committed with firearms represent 148 of the 256 murders in 2013, 57.8 percent. Through Sunday, October 13th, the number of murders committed with firearms is down by 60 from last year: 148 in 2013 compared to 208 in 2012 – a decrease of 28.8 percent.”
The city also reports a decrease in the number of shootings, “through Sunday, October 13th, New York City has seen 266 fewer total shootings than at this point last year: 879 shootings in 2013 compared to 1,145 shootings in 2012 – a decrease of 23.2 percent,” the city reported.
