A screen grab from a Chinese news report on Youtube about the incident shows the desperate mother trying to comfort her infant son at the hospital.

An eight-month-old boy was attacked in Guiyang, China, at the Guiyang Qianling Wildlife Park, where the generally well-behaved, relatively tame monkeys roam with the park’s visitors. It seems that the boy needed a diaper change and his mother was obliging, not far from some monkeys.

It’s questionable whether one can ever really know why a monkey would do such a thing, but it is probably relevant that despite zoo keepers feeding the monkeys three times daily, people often break the rules and bring food for them anyway. Incidents of negative behavior by the monkeys run in the hundreds per month these days. Some incidents are worse than others.

That being said, what happened next may not be a total surprise.

The monkey attacked the baby during the diaper change, ripped off his testicle, reports conflict as to whether one or two were ripped off, dropped it and ran away.

An elderly gentleman saw the organ on the ground and picked it up, but the jealous monkey ran back and, snatching his prize away from the man, ran away and ate it.

The child is reportedly in stable condition at a hospital.
