Police in Indiana announced the arrest of Michigan man Earl Morgan III or LaPeer, who was admitted to a central Indiana hospital in serious condition after two failed suicide attempts; one with a drill.

Traffic was a mess along I-69 for four hours after Morgan crashed his vehicle into a guard rail on the morning of August 27, 2013. A witness called 911 around 10:30 a.m. saying that he was watching as a man, who had gotten out of the wrecked 2007 Chevy Malibu and retrieved a power drill from the truck, was drilling into the back of his own head behind the right ear.

Police so far do not know why Morgan, a recent transplant from Michigan, would have wanted to kill himself. Morgan, who was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital before being transported by helicopter to St. Vincent Indianapolis hospital, is not expected to survive.

The investigation is ongoing.
