An unnamed woman in eastern China’s Anhui Province, not far from Shanghai, decided, unwisely it turns out, to try a new shortcut through a narrow gap between buildings.
Before she realized what was happening the passage had narrowed to the point that she could no longer turn around, nor could she back out. Finding herself stuck the woman called out for help.
The inhabitants of the building heard the woman’s calls of distress emanating from the walls, but decided that the noises were being made by a ghost, and so decided to ignore them — no, we are not making this up.
Her calls, which went unanswered, soon turned to cries for help and finally screams, which continued for seven hours — probably amidst bouts of weeping ans cursing, but that’s just a guess — until she was finally spotted by pedestrians.
The pedestrians immediately summoned rescuers, who broke the walls and had the exhausted woman, her clothes ripped and covered with dust, free in a about 20 minutes. No injury was reported.
