PHOTOS: Polygamist Sect Leader Warren Jeffs and his Child Brides

Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints president Warren Jeffs landed on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list in 2006 when he fled the state of Utah to avoid prosecution for performing illegal marriages between adult men and underage brides. According to evidence presented in court, Jeffs had child brides of his own. The photos below were presented at a 2008 custody hearing that stemmed from a raid on Jeffs’ FLDS compound. At that point, Jeffs had already been convicted of two counts of rape as accomplice. That conviction was overturned in 2010, but in 2011 Jeffs was tried and convicted in Texas on charges of aggravated sexual assaultĀ 12 and 15-year-old girls. He was sentenced to life plus 20 years.

These photos, first released by the Smoking Gun, show Jeffs holding and kissing two young girls dressed in wedding-like garb. One of the girls, Merrianne, was 12 in 2006 when the photo was taken. Photos with the other girl, Loretta, were taken in 2005 and labeled “first anniversary.
