A Michigan man is being hailed as one of the world’s dumbest criminals after allegedly trying to pay for a set of fingerprints with a stolen credit card.
A 28-year-old man is being described as one of the world’s dumbest criminals by Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth, after he appeared at the Central Records Unit of the Mason County Sheriff’s Office on July 11, 2013, to pay for a set of court-ordered fingerprints.
The cost of submission was $16, The man paid $15 in cash and asked the clerk to put the remaining $1 on the card. He was not arrested at the time, but Wiggelsworth has plans to catch up with him soon, musing “Is it any wonder the jail was overcrowded the last seven days?”
According to Major Joel Maatman, however, who has been in law enforcement for nearly 40 years, this type of thing “doesn’t happen very often.” Perhaps it would be wise to put up a warning sign anyway, to avoid confusion in the future.
The man, who is probably grateful that his name has not been released, was already accused of fraud and will soon be able to add credit card theft to the list of charges, because the Sheriff plans on pursuing them.
