Catherine Kieu, the Garden Grove, California woman arrested and convicted of drugging her husband, cutting off his penis, and mangling it in a kitchen sink disposal unit, was sentenced to life in prison on Friday.
Despite the harsh sentence for her torture and aggravated mayhem offenses, Kieu is parole eligible after seven years.
Kieu’s husband was not named publicly because he is a victim of spousal abuse, but he did give a victim’s impact statement at her sentencing hearing last week. He explained that subsequent surgeries returned his ability to go to the bathroom, but has forever precluded the sex life he once enjoyed.
According to the victim, Kieu had “viciously deprived me of part of my life and identity… I now struggle with what is before me. She has torn off my identity as a man. She has caused doubt in my belief in good. She has betrayed my trust in people.”
Defense attorneys contended that Kieu’s erratic behavior was brought on by post-traumatic stress disorder from sexual abuse, and that she should receive a sentence of probation. Judge Richard Toohey disagreed, concluding that the 50-year-old woman’s crimes were too serious to let her walk out of the courthouse: “Her actions were as calculated, as cold, as callous as any murder in the first-degree,” Toohey said.
