Jessica Heeringa, 25, was scheduled to close the Exxon station in North Shores, Michigan, where she was working alone late on Friday, April 26, 2013. She never closed, and has not been seen since. Police and her family believe she was abducted, possibly by someone she knew. According to Police Chief Daniel Shaw her purse and keys were still inside the store, the cash drawer was untouched and “There is no sign of a struggle in the store, so it’s possible she knew who the person was as a customer or as an acquaintance.”
Most importantly there were no security cameras at the gas station, so police are relying on the public for tips.
Her fiancé told police that she had called him between 10 and 10:15 p.m. to say she would be home. According to the receipts at the register, Jessica made the last transaction at 10:55 p.m. She would have closed the store at 11, but at 11:10, the time Jessica would have been home, they received a call from a customer saying that there was no one in the open store.
Jessica’s mother, Shelley Heeringa, told ABC News that a witness saw Jessica “walk out of the store with this guy like there was no problem,” but a struggle ensued when they reach his van. She added, “She’s very helpful, that’s why I think he lured her out of the gas station.” Jessica would have been closing the store at the time of her abduction.
Her family is canvassing the area with flyers and has set up a Facebook page for Jessica.
Police are searching for a gray minivan that was seen in the area at the time of Jessica’s abduction. The driver is described as a white male, 30 to 40 years old, six-feet tall, with a medium-to-heavy build and broad shoulders. He has light brown or dark blonde wavy hair and was seen wearing a bright red or orange sweatshirt.
Jessica Heeringa is a white female, 5-feet 1-inch tall, weighing about 110 pounds, with blond, shoulder-length hair and blue eyes. She may be wearing wired-rim glasses and may be wearing a blue collared shirt with “Sternberg Exxon” on it.
