No Jail Time for Coach Sentenced in Student Sex Act

Scott Rubinetti, 40. Police photo.

A former New Jersey high school football coach won’t see the inside of a prison after admitting to having oral sex with a 17-year-old female student. Scott Rubinetti, 40, was sentenced Friday to five years of probation. He is also required to register as a sex offender and is prohibited from working as a coach or teacher. Rubinetti pleaded guilty to criminal sexual contact and witness tampering last month. The witness tampering charge stems from Rubinetti’s asking the Lyndhurst High School senior to lie about their relationship, which reportedly occurred between 2009 and 2010.

Despite his older age, the New Jersey court was more forgiving to Rubinetti than a California court was to Joshua David Tatro, 26, a former high school water polo coach who admitted to having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl. Tatro was sentenced to two years in prison and, like Rubinetti, a lifetime on the sex offender registry. Though all the details of both cases have not been made available, perhaps Rubinetti’s resemblance to actor Adam Sandler had something to do with the judge’s relative lenience.
