‘A Threesome at Three!’ Inside Family International’s Disturbing ‘Little Fish’ Pamphlet

Formerly called Children of God, the Family International cult is most notorious for its unorthodox teachings which combine Christianity and sexual freedom. This “freedom” extended to children, who were not free to leave, and were encouraged to perform sex acts on adults and each other.

In 1975, Karen Zerby, the wife of the cult’s founder and leader David Berg, gave birth to a son. The boy, named David Moses Zerby, and later renamed Richard Smith, was a “Jesus Baby,” a product of the cult’s practice of evangelical prostitution known as Flirty Fishing. Nicknamed Davidito, the boy called Berg “dad” as did all young cult members. Unlike the others, however, he was considered to be a “divine” prince, and a 762-page book called The Story of Davidito, published in 1982, was distributed among Family communes as a manual for child rearing. Included in the book was a section called “My Little Fish,” seen below, which depicts sex acts between children.

When the Family came under heavy fire for practicing and promoting pedophilia, they took the 2700 copies of the book out of circulation and edited out the sexual parts. The book was then completely destroyed and re-released in 1997 as a cleaned-up version called Dito: The Early Years.

Davidito, renamed yet again to Ricky Rodriguez, suffered the effects of being the poster boy for molestation. In January 2005, he arranged a meeting with Angela Smith, a former nanny who participated in his sexual upbringing. Rodriguez had moved to Tuscon months prior just to find Smith, whose location was kept secret from him by the Family because he had spoken out about his abuse. Once he found her and set up a visit, he stabbed her to death in her apartment. He then drove to California, where he shot himself in the head.

In 1988, the Family declared adult-child sexual contact an excommunicable offense. However, until the policy was changed in 2010, members who filed sex abuse charges against other members were also ousted from the cult. The Family remains in operation, with over ten thousand members worldwide, including Davidito’s younger sister, Christina.

Below, see two pages from “My Little Fish” followed by an exerpt from a 1988 episode of 20/20 showing Family children reacting to the publication.
