Man Jailed After Frozen Dog Found in Yard

A Memphis man claims a misunderstanding lead to the cruel and untimely demise of his pit bull. Zangerio Dogan, 28, told police he thought his sister was supposed to be taking care of his dog. His sister, Tiffany Freeman, said she thought Dogan had picked up the animal weeks ago. Meanwhile, police say, the poor canine was outside in Freeman’s backyard, chained to a basketball net. By the time police found it Tuesday, it was dead and frozen to the ground. According to a police affidavit, the dog appeared malnourished. The chain, says the affidavit, was only two feet long and the only shelter available was a metal kennel with no top.

Frank Bursi, a neighbor, expressed his outrage to WMCTV South Memphis: “Makes me sick if you can’t bring a dog in the house and feed him…Two things I don’t stand for: Mistreating women and mistreating dogs. No way.”

Dogan was charged with aggravated animal cruelty and remains in jail on $1500 bond.

A petition calling for Freeman to be charged as well, and for both Freeman and Dogan to be barred from owning animals, has nearly reached its goal of 1,000 signatures.
