After the mid-season finale of the TV series Walking Dead on Sunday, it seems that Jared Gurman, 26, who on his Facebook page describes himself as a “passionate individual,” was engaged in a debate with his longtime girlfriend, Jessica Gelderman, over whether or not a zombie apocalypse of the type depicted on the hit show could ever happen in real life. Nassau County Detective Lt. Raymond Cote said , “He feels strongly about the possibility that some military mishap could occur. She thinks it’s ridiculous,” continuing, “She was not taking him seriously or taking the show as seriously as he does.” Gelderman decided that, as “passionate” as he was, he was not spending the night, and took him home. The argument, however, continued via text message becoming “angry and bitter,” according to Cotes.

Around 2:30 a.m. Gelderman was alarmed enough at the tone of the texts that she felt compelled to check on Gurman. When she got to his house, according to police, she found him outside waiting for her with a semi-automatic rifle. Gurman is apparently “passionate” about guns too, and has three, which police have seized. Gelderman then tried to diffuse the situation and get her boyfriend inside, but he allegedly shot her in the back as she was walking up the stairs. She begged him for help, and to his credit, he drove her to the hospital. Gelderman was admitted with a shattered rib, a pierced diaphragm and a pierced lung, and is now reportedly in serious, but stable condition.

Police said that though Gurman initially said that it was an accident, he later admitted to having shot Gelderman intentionally. He was arrested and charged with attempted murder.
