Belgian Man Seeks Annulment After Discovering That His Wife was a Man

A Belgian man, whose name is being reported only as “Jan,” 64, was having trouble with his wife Monica, 48, after she got a new full-time job. In 1993 Jan had Married Monica, an Indonesian who worked for him and his now-ex-wife as an aux pair. Recently Monica started going out clubbing at night, dressing provocatively, and receiving “amorous messages” from other men, which Jan found on her computer. The confrontation between them culminated in a violent argument in which Jan, who had been hearing the rumors that his wife was in fact a transsexual, confronted her with it, “I pushed her against the wall and said: Now I know the truth. Are you a man? She then announced that she was born as a boy and that she had been operated on.” He continued, saying, “She was now a woman, and so she did not need to tell me about her past as a man. My world collapsed. That evening came to blows. The police came.”

He now realizes that she feigned menstrual periods all those years, and that the documents and background information he presented to the Belgian authorities when he brought her into the country were likely also phony. Jan is currently undergoing counseling to help him deal with the situation, and has filed for an annulment. No word on how Monica is dealing with it, and none of the reports contain any comments from her. The courts are considering Jan’s request, but have barred him from evicting her from the family home.
