Most Wanted Fugitive Arrested in Mexico

One of the FBI’s top ten most wanted fugitives has been apprehended in Mexico, authorities say. Joe Saenz has been on the run since 1998 when he allegedly shot and killed two rival gang members in Los Angeles. Ten days later, police say Saenz kidnapped, raped and murdered Sigreta Hernandez, his girlfriend and the mother of his then two-year-old daughter. He’s also wanted for the 2008 murder of drug trafficker Oscar Torres in Los Angeles. Saenz, 37, is believed to have worked for Mexican drug cartels. His FBI profile lists over 20 aliases, which include “Honeycutt” and “Peanut Joe Smiley.”

On Thursday, Saenz was arrested in Guadalajara by Federal police and flown back to Los Angeles the next day. During his time on the lam, authorities say Saenz gained weight, had tattoos removed and even tried to alter his fingerprints to avoid capture.
