Meet Sean D. Janas, 20, of Wausau, Wisconsin, who seems to have made torturing her boyfriend’s dog to death into a fun hobby. Janas is charged with felony mistreatment of an animal causing death, poisoning an animal and lying to police. According to prosecutor’s Janas poisoned her boyfriend’s dog, Mary, 4, a German shepherd-Labrador mix, by pouring bleach and Drano down the animal’s throat on several occasions, and stabbing it. The poor creature died from the abuse in June 2012. Prosecutors added that she actually derived pleasure from torturing the dog. How do they know this? Because according to police that is what Janas wrote in her diary about the incident.
Marathon County Assistant District Attorney Lamont Jacobson told reporters, “It is just disturbing that someone could do this to an animal, and according to the diary she kept, it appears she took joy in abusing the animal.” There were several entries about abusing the dog, but Jacobson is probably referring to this entry, quoted by officers who had read the diary, “I need to find a way to killer her without it looking like I killed her. … But the pleasure I get from watching her whimper in pain and cry out for help as I shove drano and bleach down her throat is like no other.”
Janas had a preliminary hearing on October 31, in which she reportedly did not challenge the allegations against her when she waived her right to a preliminary hearing. The judge ordered a trial. If convicted she faces five years in prison and up to $30,000 in fines, which is not enough for the protesters inside and outside the courtroom, who feel Janas’ crime warrants a stiffer punishment. Prosecutors have received thousands of emails, about 100 letters and many phone calls in support of justice for Mary and an end to animal cruelty. Janas’ pre-trial hearing is scheduled for November 10. Animal and dog lovers alike have vowed to be there.
