Police in Norfolk, England, found a shell-shocked 13-year-old girl alone on a boat, her mother and mother’s boyfriend both dead in the water.

The boat’s owner called authorities after the boat had not been returned. Police found the bodies of the girl’s mother and her boyfriend in the water; autopsies revealed that the woman had likely been strangled prior to entering the water, and the man died of drowning. The woman’s death is being treated as suspicious. “We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident. Both deaths will now be referred to the Coroner and a file will be prepared for the inquest,” said¬†Detective Superintendent Jes Fry.

Sky News reports that the boyfriend is identified as John Didier, believed to be from Arkansas, although police have not confirmed his identity. Police are investigating whether a deliberate overdose may have contributed to his drowning.

Witnesses report seeing the 38-foot boat moored up for at least a week, with its cabin closed tight even on hot days. A concerned ice-cream salesman who checked on the family to see if they were OK told police he was “waved off” by the man.

The girl is being cared for by family members.
