Around 4 a.m. Friday morning police responded to a call about shots fired at a Pathmark supermarket in Old Bridge, New Jersey. The suspected gunman, 23, reportedly an ex-marine and an employee at the Pathmark for about two weeks, and 12 co-workers had been participating in an overnight re-stocking in preparation for the weekend rush. He reportedly left to go to his car and returned dressed camouflage, and armed with an AK-47 rifle and a handgun. He opened fire as he entered the store. According to Bruce Kaplan, the Middlesex County prosecutor, “Two of the employees were shot and killed, the others were able to hide and escape.” Kaplan also said that the selection of victims seems to have been random. The gunman fired at least 16 shots, killing a woman, 18, and a man, 24. Police are withholding the names of the victims, pending notification of the families. The shooter was already dead when police arrived at the scene, having turned the gun on himself. His motive is unknown at this time. The suspect was reportedly a Brooklyn native, and was engaged with plans to marry. No one else was seriously injured.
