The Utah man charged with the June rape and murder of 6-year-old Sierra Newbold has been hit with new charges. After a joint investigation conducted by the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office and the West Jordan Police Department, Black is charged with two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child and two counts of sexual abuse of a child. The charges stem from two alleged incidents in which Black is said to have sexually abused a friend of his daughter’s. According to the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office, Black abused the girl, aged 11, during a sleepover at his apartment in 2007, and again the next summer. The second time, Black allegedly called the girl and told her his daughter needed her help, but when the girl arrived, Black abused her.

Sierra Newbold’s body was discovered on the morning of June 26 in a canal near her family’s West Jordan home, a half hour after her mother reported her missing. An autopsy revealed she’d been sexually assaulted.

Black was arrested on June 29 after robbing a Wells Fargo bank and trying to take off in a stolen car.  When he was apprehended, police noticed that he lived close to the canal where Sierra’s body was found, and that debris on his pants matched the soot from a fire that had happened in the area.  Later, said Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill, Sierra’s DNA was found on Black’s body.  Black was charged with aggravated murder, child kidnapping and rape of a child.
