Police first became aware of Miami parents Renee Marie Garcia, 31, and Gabriel DeJesus Orellana, 35, when neighbors reported seeing Orellana beating a young girl outside — and possibly selling her for sex. Police set up an undercover operation to look into the prostitution allegations and contacted Orellana, who allegedly offered up his wife instead of his daughter.
An undercover officer arranged a date with Garcia, who police say wanted to buy drugs first. After making the purchase, Garcia brought the officer to the home where she and Orellana lived with four children, aged between 7 and 13. There, according to police records, the officer saw a disturbing scene: the home was uniformly coated in filth, and the two boys and two girls were living among drug paraphernalia, garbage and mildew. According to the arrest affidavit, a shoe box containing syringes and a broken glass pipe was clearly visible.
Both parents were arrested Thursday. Garcia is charged with possession of cannabis 20 grams or less, prostitution and four counts of child neglect. Orellana’s charges include four counts of child neglect and drug paraphernalia and possession with intent to use. The children were removed from the home by DCF and placed with relatives.
