Edward Justin La Porte, 47, of Mission Viejo, a retired Chicago police officer, pleaded guilty Wednesday to presenting himself as a “Massage Inspector” at the Golden Spa day spa in Lake Forest, Calif., on January 31, 2011. According to Orange County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jim Amormino, “He went in and opened his jacket revealing a 9 mm gun inside a shoulder holster. He also had two magazines of ammunition. He had a police officer’s badge on his waistband from the Arlington Heights Police Department.” La Porte reportedly identified himself as a police officer and notified the manager that he was doing a spot inspection of the spa due to customer complaints.

Though it was a little weird when La Porte complained of back pain and insisted on getting a massage, it was totally weird by the time the masseuse arrived: La Porte face down on the massage table, stark naked. She grudgingly massaged his neck and back, but when he flipped over to have her continue massaging his “front,” she got the manager, who explained that that was never going to happen, and promptly called the city to check his credentials. His happy ending denied, La Porte got dressed and demanded $200 for the inspection.

He seems to have done this free-massage shakedown to other spas in the vicinity, and city officials sent someone right over to confront him. La Porte left refusing to talk to the official, but the masseuse followed La Porte in her car, got the plate number and gave it to police. La Porte was arrested at his home and charged with suspicion of burglary and impersonating a police officer. He was sentenced to six months in jail and three years of probation after he copped to one felony count of second degree commercial burglary, two misdemeanor counts of misrepresenting oneself as a peace officer, and one felony count each of having a concealed firearm on a defendant’s person, and carrying a loaded firearm in public.
