In North Fort Meyers, Fla., a twice-convicted sex offender and his girlfriend are charged with cruelty towards a child, possession of child porn, and sexual assault on a child. The arrest came after Alan Johnson, 33, forgot his cell phone in a shopping cart at a Cape Coral Walmart earlier this month. After shoppers who found the phone looked through it and discovered what appeared to be child porn, they turned the phone over to authorities, who confirmed that there were child porn images stored on the device. The phone was registered to 37-year-old Jennifer Sparks, who was then linked to Johnson, a member of Florida’s sex offender registry.
Police executed a search warrant on the house that Johnson shared with Sparks. There, they allegedly discovered images and video footage of the couple engaging in sex acts with a 4-year-old child. The victim, a Polk County girl, was located in Lakeland, Fla., and turned over to the Department of Child Services. The girl’s parents are being investigated for their potential involvement. According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the girl was staying with Johnson and Sparks for about six weeks before being handed over to someone in Lakeland. Police suspect the girl’s parents may have been getting paid by Johnson and Sparks to have the child in their home.
Authorities also used the cell phone to track down Johnson’s Facebook page, where some of the same images found in his home were publicly displayed. According to the Facebook page, Johnson and Sparks ran an online business selling sex toys.
Johnson pleaded guilty to two federal child pornography charges in 2003 and was sentenced to 70 months in prison.
